More visits from Snowflake!

Snowflake has been visiting our room since last week and during lunch she likes to create lots of messes as well as leave us some sweet treats. She has brought us snowflake ornaments, candy, rice crispy treats, and word search books, and even Reindeer cupcakes today because she knew that's what we were studying! Snowflake has also added some great Christmas decor to our room. I wonder what else she will be doing this week...

Snowflake!

An elf has appeared in our classroom this week to monitor children's behavior and report back to Santa. So far the elf, we have named Snowflake, has brought us treats and gifts as well as decorated our classroom! On Monday Snowflake wrapped our door while we were at lunch so we couldn't get back into our classroom. She also decorated our rainforest tree where the snake lives and sat herself there for the day while leaving friends a candy cane treat. On Tuesday, Snowflake brought a light up candy cane to sit on to watch us and brought each student a notepad, pen, and candy cane. She also acted mischievous again by covering our reading table in "snow"! Check out the pictures below.

Mystery Reader Fun!

We have so enjoyed having mystery readers this fall and can't wait to have more in the new year! Here are pictures from the latest readers.

Our Veteran's Day care packages were a success! LT Williams was very excited to receive our package and sent us a thank you note and a few pictures of our spirit shirt flying over Iraq with him. Thank you for making this project a success and helping to teach the children an important lesson this time of year.

Big Universe

We have acquired a brand new reading component that allows students to read books of all topics as well as ability level. I have set up an account for everyone and the username and password are both your student's lunch number and the group username is Fairhope. The link will be kept on the left-hand side of the blog along with other great resources for online learning. Students can choose books to keep in their personal bookshelf and I can also assign books for students to read. If you click on the "Read" bar at the top then "Browse Library" right below the picture that comes up you will be able to narrow your search by level, grade, subject, etc. to meet your child's individual interests and needs. I am going to play around with it and try to assign a few books for each student on their level to practice at home. This is a site that will work on the iPad or tablet if you have one at home. If you have any questions please let me know but we will be practicing using this in the classroom so hopefully they can teach you at home!

Australian Visitors

We had a very special surprise this week. A friend in Mrs. Cox's room has family friends who actually live in Australia! They came to our school this past week and shared with us some words that are different in Australia as well as answered our many questions. We love hearing their accent and getting to meet them!

Reptiles it is!

We have decided on studying the rainforest first now that we are in Australia. We explored the different types of animals found in rainforest and decided that we wanted to learn about reptiles first. We took a vote on which type of reptile: a snake, a dragon, a spotted tree monitor, a gecko, and frogs just for fun. Our friends chose to study snakes first. We looked at six different kinds of snakes and voted to study the Amethystine Python. I have attached our voting list so you can see how overwhelming the vote was! My guess is because it can grow up to 28 feet long! We are excited to begin researching all about this type of snake and building a life size one ourselves next week!

Australia Flight

We made it! We are currently in Australia for the remainder of the school year after a successful flight on Friday. The students worked so hard to learn about the different parts of an airport and worked together to make the flight possible. Check out some of the pictures of our class, Mrs. Cox's class, and Miss Stoddard's class during the flight!

Pizza and Packing

Friday was a special day in our classroom because not only did we get to have pizza and cupcakes for lunch, but we packed our suitcases for Australia! We made sure to pack toothpaste and a toothbrush, clothes, snacks, and much more. Check out the pictures below to see our progress. This week we will be in charge of building the security for the airport while three other first grade classes build air traffic control, the airplane, and take of the grounds crew jobs. We will be taking flight this coming Friday afternoon!
